'US strike' on Pakistan militants

At least 12 militants have died in a missile strike by a suspected US drone in north-west Pakistan, intelligence officials and residents say.

The attack targeted a stronghold of Pakistan's top Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud in South Waziristan, near the Afghan border.

The missiles flattened a compound in the Zangarha area, officials said.

There have been dozens of such strikes since last August, killing hundreds of militants and civilians.

Most strikes have taken place in the tribal regions of North and South Waziristan.

Local officials told the BBC Urdu service's Dilawar Khan that a suspected US drone had fired two missiles at a militant compound in the Zangarha area, 15km (9 miles) north-east of the town of Ladha.

Witnesses told the BBC that many militants loyal to Baitullah Mehsud were present at the time of the attack.

Residents said that militants were digging through the debris to recover bodies, but that they were also avoiding gathering in large numbers on the road to Zangarha for fear of another attack.

"Our initial reports from agents in the field say at least 12 to 14 Taliban have died in today's American missile attack," the Associated Press news agency quoted an official as saying.

The strikes come at a time when the Pakistani government is engaged in operations against the Taliban commander in South Waziristan.

Criticism

Last month, a suspected drone struck twice within hours killing more than 60 people - most of them militants who had gathered for the funeral of those killed in the first strike.

Pakistan has been publicly critical of drone attacks, arguing that they kill civilians and fuel support for the militants.

The US military does not routinely confirm drone attacks but the armed forces and the Central Intelligence Agency operating in Afghanistan are believed to be the only forces capable of deploying drones in the region.

In March, US President Barack Obama said his government would consult Pakistan on drone attacks.

Strauss confident of Ashes glory

England captain Andrew Strauss says he is confident his side can get off to a winning start when the Ashes series against Australia begins on Wednesday.

Strauss will lead his team out in Cardiff and said: "An Ashes series is different to everything else.

"With the tradition, history and great battles of the past, this is what everyone wants to be involved in. It's like the football World Cup for us.

"It means a lot to the England players and we are treating it in that way."

Strauss believes key all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, who shone in the dramatic series win four years ago, is desperate to once again play in a winning Ashes team.

Flintoff also captained England when they suffered a 5-0 whitewash to Australia in 2006-07 and Strauss says that makes him even more determined.

"The Ashes is in the back of your mind," admitted the 31-year-old. "When I was in the gym and trying to get back to fitness, it was all about playing in the Ashes.

"The reason you do all the rehab is to put back on that England shirt, to get the chance to play in an Ashes series.

"I'd have loved to have played in the Twenty20 World Cup because it is a great tournament, but the ultimate is the Ashes.

"You can have any other tournament you want but to have the chance to play in the Ashes is everything. It is the biggest thing for an Englishman to play in."

Strauss, meanwhile, admits a good start in Cardiff - which has never hosted an Ashes Test before - is crucial in the five-match series.

"You definitely want early momentum in a series like this because once you go behind it's hard to pull it back," added Strauss.

"I guess both teams are looking to gain some early confidence and you can only do that by playing some good cricket."

Australia go into their first Ashes series since the retirements of Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer.

They have also suffered a major blow with fast bowler Brett Lee ruled out with a hip injury. but Strauss is nevertheless expecting a stern test of his side's credentials.

"We have to be wary about how much we talk about Brett because although he's a fantastic bowler, whoever replaces him will complete a strong attack," said Strauss.

"They will have a good balance and we will be expecting a severe examination right from the start - the worst thing we could do is assume the bowling attack will be worse off without him.

"It's true that Australia have lost some players with aura so maybe it's not quite as intimidating as it used to be, but we're expecting some hard cricket.

LA countdown to Jackson memorial

Fans have begun to gather outside the Staples Center in Los Angeles for Michael Jackson's memorial concert, amid strong police presence.

The show, which begins at 1000 local time (1800 BST), will feature Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder.

Concrete barriers have been erected outside the concert hall, where Jackson had been rehearsing a comeback show before his untimely death on 25 June.

The memorial will be broadcast in the UK on BBC Two and Sky Arts 1.

Other people due to take part in the service include Motown boss Berry Gordy, Lionel Richie, Jennifer Hudson, and Britain's Got Talent finalist Shaheen Jafargholi, who has played the young Michael Jackson in the musical Thriller - Live.

More than 1.6 million people applied for one of the 11,000 passes issued for the event, with an additional 6,500 issued for a screening at the nearby Nokia Theatre.

A total of 8,750 people were chosen at random to receive a pair of tickets to attend the ceremony.

But many ticketless fans have arrived in Los Angeles hoping to get into the Staples Center, including Briton Vikkie Spencer.

"We just wanted to come and there's going to be loads of people around anyway and we're just going to be part of it," she said.

"We're just going to go and wait outside and hope to buy some [tickets]".

The Los Angeles Police Department, trying to avoid a mob scene, have warned those without tickets they will not be able to get close to the venue.

Assistant police chief for Los Angeles, Jim McDonnell, told CNN he did not anticipate any trouble.

"It will be a crowd that gathers for the right reasons and keeps the reason they're there in mind," he said.

One person who will not be attending is Jackson's former wife and the mother of two of his children, Debbie Rowe.

"The onslaught of media attention has made it clear her attendance would be an unnecessary distraction to an event that should focus exclusively on Michael's legacy," her lawyer Marta Almli said in a statement.

"Debbie will continue to celebrate Michael's memory privately."

Jackson's long-time friend Elizabeth Taylor has also declined the opportunity to speak at the memorial.

"I cannot be part of the public whoopla [sic]," she wrote on Twitter.

"And I cannot guarantee that I would be coherent to say a word."

"I just don't believe that Michael would want me to share my grief with millions of others. How I feel is between us. Not a public event."

About 50 cinemas across the US are planning to broadcast the memorial live, for free.

It will also be relayed to big screens across the UK, Australia and Hong Kong.

Family service

Meanwhile, Jackson's family will attend a private service - expected to be the singer's funeral, shortly before the memorial.

The family have remained tight-lipped about the singer's final resting place, but police have confirmed that a "private function" will be held at the Forest Lawn cemetery in Los Angeles.

Several carloads of people, including his sister La Toya, were seen arriving at the heavily secured cemetery on Monday evening, shortly after a hearse arrived, accompanied by five police cars.

BBC reporter Peter Bowes said the Jackson family were due to gather at Forest Lawn "very early in the morning".

"They hope it will be a private and relatively quiet service for a few family members and a few close friends, although it probably won't be."

10 coalition soldiers killed in Afghanistan

KABUL: Bombs and bullets killed seven American troops while three NATO troops died in a helicopter crash in one of the deadliest days for foreign troops in Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001, officials said Tuesday.

Four of the deaths Monday came in an attack on a team of U.S. military trainers in the relatively peaceful north, Navy Chief Petty Officer Brian Naranjo, a U.S. military spokesman.

Two Americans were killed in a roadside blast in southern Afghanistan, Naranjo said.

Another American soldier died of wounds in a Monday firefight with militants in the east, a U.S. military spokesman said. Also in the south, two Canadian and a Briton serving with the NATO-led force were killed Monday when their helicopter crashed in Zabul province, said a spokesman for the military alliance, Lt.Commander Chris Hall. The incident was not caused by insurgent fire, Hall said.

SC suspends carbon tax on petroleum products

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has given interim verdict to suspend the enforcement of the carbon surcharge tax, Geo News reported Tuesday.

The bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry heard the petitions filed against the raise in petroleum prices.

In case, the carbon tax is withdrawn on petroleum products, the petrol price is expected to come down by Rs10/lit and diesel price to lower by Rs8/lit and the kerosene oil to come down by Rs6/lit.

The apex court directed Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) to issue notification regarding suspending the carbon tax on petroleum products.

Talking to media, Senior Counsel Akram Chaudhry said that the higher judiciary cancelled the notification issued on June 30 and directed to stop charging the carbon tax until the Court concludes hearing.

Attorney General of Pakistan Lateef Khosa, Secretary Petroleum and representative of OGRA attended the hearing.

Commenting on the verdict, Adviser on Petroleum Dr Asim Hussain said the price of petroleum products will return to pre July 1 level, adding the ministry of petroleum respects the verdict of higher judiciary.

Pakistan stunned by Sri Lanka’s dramatic win in 1st Test

18 militants killed, 2 soldiers martyred in Waziristan operation

RAWALPINDI: In last 24 hours, 18 militants were killed and 13 were apprehended in various areas of Swat and South Waziristan, while 2 soldiers embraced shahadat and 4 soldiers and 4 civilians were injured, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Monday.

According to the ISPR, normalcy is returning at Mingora at fast pace. Provision of food items and medicines are being organized and executed. Security forces have launched the operation to secure Charbagh. Heavy clashes are taking place to secure Jangle Jerki. Security forces have also started operation to link Kabbal with Sirsanai. Forces are facing stiff resistance.

In Peochar, security forces carried out search and destroy operation in Dambar Kandao area and destroyed miscreants training center. During the operation 50-60 feet long newly constructed tunnel was destroyed and huge cache of Arms and Ammunition were also destroyed, while 1 soldier was injured due to miscreant’s fire. Newly planted IEDs in front of the tunnel were neutralized, while 9 miscreants were killed and 6 were injured.

Security Forces have commenced operation towards Shalwa Kandao and occupied height east of Waliabad and moving towards Guliabad (north of Charbagh). Miscreant’s hideout at Kalagai, was engaged, resultantly 3 miscreants were killed and 7 were apprehended.

Meanwhile, five trucks carrying 25 tons of rations have been dispatched for the stranded people of Khawazakhela and army provided two trucks of relief goods for IDPs at Thana and Chakdara.

Curfew relaxed in parts of Swat

SWAT: Security forces on Monday pressed their offensive against the militants in the northwest Swat district, closing in on a key town after pushing into a strategic valley, while curfew has been relaxed in various areas of Swat and Shangla till 5pm.

Mingora, the main town in Swat, is back under government control and that troops are now hunting the top leadership of the hard-line militants in the nearby mountains.

"Security forces have encircled Charbagh town where some top militant commanders are holed up," military officials said.

Troops dropped leaflets, warning people to evacuate ahead of a possible operation in Charbagh and curfew has been relaxed to enable civilians to leave the area, which has a population of 20,000-25,000.

Charbagh lies 20 kilometers north of Mingora and has been described as one of the most important militant strongholds after Peochar.

"Checkpoints have been established in the towns of Khwazakhela and Manglawar, north and south of Charbagh respectively, to effectively cut off any possible supplies to the militants," officials said.

Attack helicopters and artillery shelled militant hideouts in Kabal and Lower Malam Jabba overnight into Monday.

The military said security forces entered Kalam, a strategic valley around 90 kilometers north of Mingora, on Sunday where operations were under way to flush out the militants.

Military says more than 1,200 militants have been killed and 80 soldiers were martyred in the onslaught, launched in the districts of Lower Dir on April 26, Buner on April 28 and Swat on May 8.

US drone strikes hit 'high-value' Al-Qaeda targets: report

WASHINGTON: US missiles from unmanned drones have eliminated about half of 20 "high-value" Al-Qaeda and other extremist targets along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan, a US newspaper reported Monday.

Citing unnamed US military and intelligence officials, the newspaper said the strikes and Pakistan's ongoing military offensive in the Swat Valley have unsettled Al-Qaeda and its relative invulnerability in Pakistani mountain sanctuaries.

The report did not identify who or what the "high-value" targets were. Although Al-Qaeda remains "a serious, potent threat," the paper quotes a US counterterrorism official as saying, "they've suffered some serious losses and seem to be feeling a heightened sense of anxiety -- and that's not a bad thing at all."

A senior military official said that in the current situation, Al-Qaeda will have to undertake more open communication on cell phones and computers, even if only to gather information on the situation in the region. "Then they become more visible," the official is quoted as saying.

LONDON: Pakistan captain Younus Khan said the upcoming ICC World Twenty20 in England had a special significance for his side after their country had become a virtual 'no-go zone' for international cricket.

"It is special to be back on the world stage, especially in Twenty20 and in England, the media are here so lots of hopes are here," the talented batsman told reporters at Lord's here on Sunday.

"We are suffering from not playing regularly, and no-one is coming to Pakistan," he added.

Pakistan endured a defeat at the hands of arch-rivals India in the 2007 World Twenty20 final in South Africa and Younus would love nothing more than for his team to go one better this time.

"My confidence is that I'll take this trophy to Pakistan," he said. But such has been Pakistan's relative lack of international cricket that he added: "It will be an achievement for us to finish in the top four."

Reflecting on the 2007 final, Younus said: "The finishing touches were not there. We needed only five runs. But it was fantastic to be a part of that team in the final.

Twenty20 tends to put a premium on big-hitting batsmen at the start of the innings but Younus, whose team face England and the Netherlands in Group B, said it was not necessary to start going for big shots right from the off.

"In English conditions the new ball does seam, so you need someone like Salman Butt who can play for 20 overs. But in the middle order, we have big hitters like Shahid Afridi and Misbah-Ul-Haq."

English officials have already announced that plans are well advanced for Pakistan to play two Tests against Australia in England next year as well as a series with Andrew Strauss's men.

NOTTINGHAM: Pakistan will take on South Africa in a warm up match in connection with the preparation of Twenty20 World Cup whereas defending champion India will face New Zealand and Australia meet Bangladesh.

The match between Pakistan and South Africa will be started at 10:30 pm.

Petrol, gas and electricity subsidy to end: Shaukat Tarin

KARACHI: Finance Advisor, Shaukat Tarin has said that a decision for putting an end to the subsidy on petrol, gas and electricity has been taken.

Addressing a seminar on ‘IMF role in Pakistan economy’ under the aegis of Institute of Business Administration (IBA), the finance advisor said that the government was facing economic challenges. He said that the current fiscal year revenue recoveries would amount to Rs1180 billion, but yet the recoveries have been crucial problem for the government and this was the reason that the prices of petroleum products were not reduced.

Shaukat Tarin said that serious notice has been taken of the FBR harassing consumers. He said that the focus for the next year would be to revive the economy after stabilization. He pointed out that attention would also be paid towards the revenue generation. He explained that the tax would not be increased and instead efforts would be made to expand the tax net. This would be carried out administratively and also on the policy basis

Finance advisor said that Pakistan’s three national enterprise—Pakistan Steel, Railway and PIA were cumulatively incurring losses of over Rs200 billion annually.

He said that relief would be given to the middle class in the upcoming budget, while the new National Financial Award (NFC) would be presented with the consensus of the four provinces.

Umar Gul set to fire in World Twenty20

KARACHI: Pace spearhead Umar Gul insists he will not curb his aggressive style of bowling during the World Twenty20, saying his wicket-taking ability is key if Pakistan are to clinch the title.

The 25-year-old, who is the leading wicket-taker in the newest form of the game with 24 victims in 14 matches, is in the best form of his career.

The lanky Peshawar-born paceman boasts a career-best 4-8 - the second best performance in T20 internationals behind New Zealand's Mark Gillespie's 4-7 against Kenya in 2007 - which helped Pakistan beat Australia in Dubai.

"I want to do better than the last time," said Gul, who finished as the leading wicket-taker with 13 in seven matches to anchor Pakistan's runners-up finish to India in the inaugural World Twenty20 held in South Africa in 2007.

Gul said he sees the batsman-oriented Twenty20 cricket as a big challenge.

"Bowling in Twenty20 is a great challenge, but I am always up for it and I believe in attacking the batsmen from the first delivery to the last," he said.

Gul will be spearheading an attack which includes fast maturing Sohail Tanvir, Rao Iftikhar, Yasir Arafat and newcomer Mohammad Aamir.

The line-up looks inexperienced after Shoaib Akhtar was withdrawn due to injury and with Mohammad Asif still absent because of a one-year ban on doping.

But Gul is confident Pakistan can still bowl their opponents out.

"We have a balanced attack and if we bowl to a tight line and length, then we can get teams out or restrict them to gettable totals," said Gul, who prefers to come as first-change in Twenty20 matches.

"Coming on first change helps you get more swing and it's the ideal time to not only stop the flow of runs but to take wickets.

"We came so close to winning the title in 2007 but it was bad luck," added Gul, whose three wickets restricted India to 157-5 in the final in the inaugural World Twenty20.

"This time round we want to finish it without a blemish. The title, nothing less, is the aim."

Swat operation to end within 2/3 days: Secretary Defence

ISLAMABAD: Secretary Defence, Syed Athar Ali has expressed the hope that Swat underway operation would end within two/three days.
